Academic Course Offerings (Sample)

Experiential and Immersive Design

The course combines standard lecture lessons in design for the built environment with practical, hands-on participation.

The main project of the course is an immersive event, designed and produced by all students in the class collectively. Students learn spatial design and storytelling, physical design considerations, technology integration, and event production.

Set Design for Theater and the Performing Arts

The course combines lectures on the various steps of the set design process with hands-on assignments.

The main project of the course is to design the set for a play (selected by the instructor or collectively by the class). Part of every class session will be a lab for troubleshooting and working through aspects of the project. Students will learn the basis of digital design tools (drafting, 3D modeling, and visualization), physical design tools (sketching, scale model building), as well as practical skills such as research, presentation, and portfolio building.

Inclusive Design for the Built Environment

The course is for students of architecture, interior, and landscape design, as well as relevant specializations such as hospitality, building or office management, and business operation.

Students will learn history and development of accessibility standards, the ADA and other relevant laws and codes, as well as digital accessibility fundamentals such as familiarity with WCAG.

Inclusive Design for Experiential Designers

This presentation offers a framework for analyzing the different aspects of what constitutes a guest experience, and the various ways inclusive strategies can plug into the design process in order to enhance the event success.

Designers will gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities they have to combine inclusive and experience design strategies and be empowered to create truly innovative experiences.

Sustainable Design for Immersive Digital Media

This presentation offers ways to design immersive experiences consciously and critically. From concept and storytelling, to spatial design, to media specification and installation, there are numerous points throughout the design process where sustainable decisions can positively impact the project success.

The presentation can be adapted to cater to full teams or made more relevant to designers, project managers, or technologists.

Permaculture Design (Various Applications)

Rooted in the wisdom of Indigenous practices, regenerative systems design (also known as “permaculture”) is about creating permanent and thriving systems that work and evolve sustainably. Circularity is a more recent term and refers to closed-loop systems where outputs become inputs. Beyond design and production, these principles can be applied to how we build communities, how we learn and teach, and how we conduct business.

Example audiences may include: architectural and landscape designers, procurement and operations managers, building managers, office administrators.
